Overview

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." The most famous opening line in Stephen King's canon deserves a cover that's as economical as the sentence. This self-initiated redesign of The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger throws out the usual fantasy clutter for a single, quiet idea.

The whole cover is one double-image: the silhouette of Roland walking becomes the barrel and grip of a revolver, the desert reading as both landscape and gunmetal. One look tells you the genre, the tone, and the loneliness of the whole series.

The cover

Type does the rest: a heavy, weathered display for The Gunslinger, tracked-out small caps for the series line, and a sun-bleached palette of bone, sand, and rust. Restraint as atmosphere.

The series

One trick,
seven books.

Every volume gets its own silhouette, pulled from something inside that book — the Drawing of the Three's lobster-claw, the Wastelands' bear, Wizard and Glass's conjurer, the Wolves' robot-wolf, Susannah's pregnant silhouette — each one holding a second image inside it, so the shape tells you the creature and the scene tells you the story. The Gunslinger opens the shelf with a revolver; The Dark Tower closes it with the tower itself, rising out of a field of roses.

The best book covers keep a secret in plain sight. This one hides a revolver in a sunset — you see it a half-second after you feel it.
